Sight
What
is sight?
Sight is one
of our 6 senses; seeing, smelling, touching, tasting, hearing and
proprioception. Seeing initially is
light passing through our cornea. The differences in the light effect what we
see, it effects the color as well as the shape or form.
Color
Depending what colors of lights are reflecting
will determine what color we view something as. The primary colors of light are
red, blue and green, these are
different than the primary colors of pigment, which can be a challenging thing
to understand. Based on how much red or blue is in an area we will
see shades of red, blue and purple,
if there is green and red in an area we will see those shades as well of yellow now, or usually more scientifically called amber. If
there is a problem in the receptors of light, then you are likely to not be
able to see one of or two of these colors, typically green
or red, this is where colorblindness comes from.
Forms
or Shapes
Perceiving
forms is very important processes in vision. Our brains create forms of
components sensations based on the idea that the whole is more than the sum of
the parts or a term called, gestalt. There are 5 different principles of
gestalt: figure and ground, similarity,
proximity, continuity, and
closure.

I think
closure is the most interesting type of form. The description of closure is we
tend to fill in gaps in an incomplete image to create a complete, whole object.
The image of closure, the cones and spikes, reminds me of an optical illusion.
An optical illusion is something that
deceives the eye by appearing to be other than it is. I really enjoy
looking as optical illusions and trying to figure out how they work. Sadly, I can’t
figure out a lot of them even though they may be simple because I have a rare
form of astigmatism, most of the time it is a simple wave pattern on the lens
of the eye, but in most people there is only one wave per a certain amount of
area, but I have two which is considered a double astigmatism, this also
effects my depth perception, which makes it hard to decipher things as well. I
still love optical illusions as well.
In the Illusion of Sex, two
faces are perceived as male and female. However, both faces are actually
versions of the same androgynous face. One face was created by increasing the
contrast of the androgynous face, while the other face was created by
decreasing the contrast. The face with more contrast is perceived as female,
while the face with less contrast is perceived as male. The Illusion of Sex
demonstrates that contrast is an important cue for perceiving the sex of a
face, with greater contrast appearing feminine, and lesser contrast appearing
masculine.

Sierra, I really enjoyed reading your blog. I was able to learn a lot of new things from it. One thing that stood out to me was the illusion of sex. This stood out to me because this was a concept that I never thought of before. I really enjoyed your blog and look forward to reading more of them throughout this course.
ReplyDeleteI had looked through quite a few different illusions and I felt like this was the most interesting and could be connected the most to this class, and assignment .
DeleteI also wrote about Optical Illusions! I love watching and looking at them as well. The photos you used were so interesting. There fact that a change in shadowing can change the way people view female vs male is really interesting. I'm curious as to how that way of thinking developed. The information you gave regarding vision and colors was very well written and full of information. I enjoyed reading this blog!
ReplyDeleteHey Sierra! I enjoy a good optical illusion every once and a while. I find the ones you wrote about extremely interesting because I didn't really know anything about them. I really hope that no one adds contrast to a picture of my face and uses it as as an optical illusion. How would you feel if you did that to a picture of you, would you think it was cool?
ReplyDeleteHey Rachel, I don't know if I would mind if someone added contrast to my face to make it an optical illusion. I'm actually learning in one of my theatre classes how to distort features on my face with makeup. I would probably also be flattered that they chose my face .
DeleteI think that it is very interesting that the differences between the two faces are only seen because of contrasts in editing. I am also a fan of optical illusions because they deceive our minds into thinking that we are seeing something that is actually not there. This is why I find magic tricks so interesting. Magicians have the ability to put images on a stage that appear to be real, but actually are not. The smoke and mirrors of their acts cause us to perceive things that may not actually be there at all. The idea of color blindness also fascinates me, and it is amazing that we only have three primary colors, but are able to see many different shades and hues in our every day lives.
