Sight and Percieving

Sight
What is sight?
Sight is one of our 6 senses; seeing, smelling, touching, tasting, hearing and proprioception.  Seeing initially is light passing through our cornea. The differences in the light effect what we see, it effects the color as well as the shape or form.
Color
Depending what colors of lights are reflecting will determine what color we view something as. The primary colors of light are red, blue and green, these are different than the primary colors of pigment, which can be a challenging thing to understand. Based on how much red or blue is in an area we will see shades of red, blue and purple, if there is green and red in an area we will see those shades as well of yellow now, or usually more scientifically called amber.  If there is a problem in the receptors of light, then you are likely to not be able to see one of or two of these colors, typically green or red, this is where colorblindness comes from.
Forms or Shapes
Perceiving forms is very important processes in vision. Our brains create forms of components sensations based on the idea that the whole is more than the sum of the parts or a term called, gestalt. There are 5 different principles of gestalt: figure and ground, similarity, proximity, continuity, and closure.

Figure and Ground
Similarity
Proximity
Continuity
Closure

I think closure is the most interesting type of form. The description of closure is we tend to fill in gaps in an incomplete image to create a complete, whole object. The image of closure, the cones and spikes, reminds me of an optical illusion. An optical illusion is something that deceives the eye by appearing to be other than it is. I really enjoy looking as optical illusions and trying to figure out how they work. Sadly, I can’t figure out a lot of them even though they may be simple because I have a rare form of astigmatism, most of the time it is a simple wave pattern on the lens of the eye, but in most people there is only one wave per a certain amount of area, but I have two which is considered a double astigmatism, this also effects my depth perception, which makes it hard to decipher things as well. I still love optical illusions as well.

In the Illusion of Sex, two faces are perceived as male and female. However, both faces are actually versions of the same androgynous face. One face was created by increasing the contrast of the androgynous face, while the other face was created by decreasing the contrast. The face with more contrast is perceived as female, while the face with less contrast is perceived as male. The Illusion of Sex demonstrates that contrast is an important cue for perceiving the sex of a face, with greater contrast appearing feminine, and lesser contrast appearing masculine.

  1. Sierra, I really enjoyed reading your blog. I was able to learn a lot of new things from it. One thing that stood out to me was the illusion of sex. This stood out to me because this was a concept that I never thought of before. I really enjoyed your blog and look forward to reading more of them throughout this course.

    1. I had looked through quite a few different illusions and I felt like this was the most interesting and could be connected the most to this class, and assignment .

  2. I also wrote about Optical Illusions! I love watching and looking at them as well. The photos you used were so interesting. There fact that a change in shadowing can change the way people view female vs male is really interesting. I'm curious as to how that way of thinking developed. The information you gave regarding vision and colors was very well written and full of information. I enjoyed reading this blog!

  3. Hey Sierra! I enjoy a good optical illusion every once and a while. I find the ones you wrote about extremely interesting because I didn't really know anything about them. I really hope that no one adds contrast to a picture of my face and uses it as as an optical illusion. How would you feel if you did that to a picture of you, would you think it was cool?

    1. Hey Rachel, I don't know if I would mind if someone added contrast to my face to make it an optical illusion. I'm actually learning in one of my theatre classes how to distort features on my face with makeup. I would probably also be flattered that they chose my face .

  4. I think that it is very interesting that the differences between the two faces are only seen because of contrasts in editing. I am also a fan of optical illusions because they deceive our minds into thinking that we are seeing something that is actually not there. This is why I find magic tricks so interesting. Magicians have the ability to put images on a stage that appear to be real, but actually are not. The smoke and mirrors of their acts cause us to perceive things that may not actually be there at all. The idea of color blindness also fascinates me, and it is amazing that we only have three primary colors, but are able to see many different shades and hues in our every day lives.

M7: Active Listening

This past week I got to experience a lot of active listening, and it wasn’t even for the assignment, but I used the techniques described to us in all of those conversations that I had. I had to do a lot of listening this week because I got put in between two friends who were having a dispute and didn’t want to directly talk to each other so I became their “owl.”🦉 I learned a lot about being an active listener in this situation because not only did I have to understand what they were saying and feeling because that’s what you should do when you are listening to someone and trying to be an active listener, but I also had to take this information pull out the parts the other person needed to receive and give it to them. I had about 3 conversations with each of them that were back and forth, I also had other one on one conversations with them, but not about this situation. I always try to be an active listener, because if I'm talking to someone I would want that from them as well....

"What's Your Story?"

When I think of multiculturalism  I think of the coexist stickers, everyone coming together to live a life together without judgement. Sadly though we aren't  coexist ing as a nation, we are all going against each other because we think our view of people is better than others, we judge before we even know them, or even when we do know them. We doesn’t have to be the way thought. We need to learn that our differences can bring us together . What is different in my life can open up something new in your life or make you realize something you had never thought of about your own life. Learn from people's differences. I have just recently learned so many new things about myself because of things I've found out about some of my closest friends that I didn’t even know was a part of them. Understanding of ones sexuality is a big deal in modern society. There are so many different places to fall on the spectrum of the L G B T Q community, which the acronym  L G B T Q ...
