Final Learning Reflection

I’ve always been intrigued by psychology. It is all around us in our everyday lives whether we realize it or not, or ever really think about it. Most people tend to think of psychology as being a therapist, or having to go to therapy, or as someone who has a mental illness and need to go see someone to help with it. Therapy is only a small percentage of what psychology really is, and therapy is only a subcategory under an extensive list of several types of psychology. We even did an entire blog on the different subfields of psychology that we as individuals thought we would most like to have a career in. This was a fun assignment because we really had to think about ourselves and what aspects of ourselves could we use in the field of psychology. I kept going back and forth between a few, but the more I assessed myself, which is another part of psychology is self-assessment, the more I realized what I would love to do if I was in the psychology field, and what I thought I would be abl...

M7: Active Listening

This past week I got to experience a lot of active listening, and it wasn’t even for the assignment, but I used the techniques described to us in all of those conversations that I had. I had to do a lot of listening this week because I got put in between two friends who were having a dispute and didn’t want to directly talk to each other so I became their “owl.”🦉 I learned a lot about being an active listener in this situation because not only did I have to understand what they were saying and feeling because that’s what you should do when you are listening to someone and trying to be an active listener, but I also had to take this information pull out the parts the other person needed to receive and give it to them. I had about 3 conversations with each of them that were back and forth, I also had other one on one conversations with them, but not about this situation. I always try to be an active listener, because if I'm talking to someone I would want that from them as well....

"What's Your Story?"

When I think of multiculturalism  I think of the coexist stickers, everyone coming together to live a life together without judgement. Sadly though we aren't  coexist ing as a nation, we are all going against each other because we think our view of people is better than others, we judge before we even know them, or even when we do know them. We doesn’t have to be the way thought. We need to learn that our differences can bring us together . What is different in my life can open up something new in your life or make you realize something you had never thought of about your own life. Learn from people's differences. I have just recently learned so many new things about myself because of things I've found out about some of my closest friends that I didn’t even know was a part of them. Understanding of ones sexuality is a big deal in modern society. There are so many different places to fall on the spectrum of the L G B T Q community, which the acronym  L G B T Q ...

Learning

Science Behind Learning Learning happens to us every day of our lives, from the second we are born, or even before. Learning is described as the process by which life experience causes change in the behavior or thinking of an organism. There are several types of leaning, association, maturation and conditioning are just a few. Conditioning is one of the most common forms of learning. Classical conditioning is a form of learning in which animals or people make a connection between two stimuli that have occurred together such that one predicts the other. They have done studies on both humans and animals, dogs to be particular in this research. They were able to condition dogs to know they were going to receive food any time they heard a bell, or they also used circles to get the dogs to know they are receiving food. This type of learning is generalization. Generalization is the process by which stimuli that are similar to the conditioned stimulus cause the same conditioned reaction....

My Life

This project made me look at myself and my life in so many new ways.I had always heard things my mom had told me I was like growing up and just disregarded them. Now that we are looking at development and personality I realize all those things I did made me into who I am and helped in my development. The one thing I really started feeling while typing things about my childhood is that I may sound pretentious, because I was just a chill child, much like I am still today, but I promise I'm not, I know I'm no better than anyone else, and I wouldn't want to be.

Personality Assesment

Personality Assessments Personality types are some of the greatest things to learn about people. Typically, when I meet a new person I will ask them what there Myers-Briggs personality type is. I am an INFP , which I think is very fitting based on their summary of what this type is like, and how I would interact with other types. I decided to try another personality test, because I've taken the Myers-Briggs so many times before and got the same results, so I wanted to know how I ranked on other tests. I took the Big Five test, and let me just say some of the results didn’t seem right to me. The Big Five measures five broad types of your personality. The types can be remembered using the acronym O C E A N , O penness to Experience, C onsciousness, E xtraversion, A greeability, and N euroticism. Each of these five categories have 6 different facets to help break down and understand your personality better. My Personality Type The one that confused me the most was my score o...

Parenting and Attachment

There are four common parenting styles; permissive-neglectful, permissive-indulgent, authoritarian, and authoritative. I was raised in a pretty permissive-indulgent house hold. Permissive-indulgent is described as parents set few limits or demands, but are highly involved and emotionally connected. I would say I had more demands put upon on me then the description makes it sound like but I knew what was right and wrong, and that things had consequences so I based my decisions off that. My parents have always been super supportive and right behind me in any decision I have ever made. My childhood was very different from almost everyone I grew up around, the major factor was that I was an only child so my parents only had to worry about me, but at the same time it looked like they didn’t care what I chose to do. They wanted me to be able to experience everything I could, whether it was good or bad, they always said learn from your experiences. This came a lot from my parents both being ...

Effects of Music on the Brain

I was able to talk to one of my close friends Molly Cate , who was previously a Musical Theatre major, so she worked with music a lot. I knew she had had some issues with a concussion and having to relearn how to sing again, but I was unaware of all the actual effects it had had. She really felt like music was what saved her after that and was able to get her brain restarted and her memories back in order. Music has had a big impact on her life that she wasn't even aware it had had. I think its amazing how such a simple thing as music can have such an impact on the world, and everyone in it.

Sight and Percieving

Sight What is sight? Sight is one of our 6 senses; seeing, smelling, touching, tasting, hearing and proprioception.  Seeing initially is light passing through our cornea. The differences in the light effect what we see, it effects the color as well as the shape or form. Color  Depending what colors of lights are reflecting will determine what color we view something as. The primary colors of light are red , blue and green , these are different than the primary colors of pigment, which can be a challenging thing to understand. Based on how much red or blue is in an area we will see shades of red , blue and purple , if there is green and red in an area we will see those shades as well of yellow now, or usually more scientifically called amber .  If there is a problem in the receptors of light, then you are likely to not be able to see one of or two of these colors, typically green or red , this is where colorblindness comes from. Forms or Shapes Perceivi...

Sleep on the Brain

Sleep Fascination Sleep is one of the most interesting things about the body to me, but it is also the most confusing. How do are bodies just stop doing things(it's like we are dead, but we are still breathing), and then you wake back up and are fully functioning again? That's just really weird to me. I find sleep so interesting because I have so many different sleep issues that I have to deal with. Through the reading from this week I discovered some of the things I thought were happening in my sleep are really things and not just something I made myself believe. The more i keep reading about how sleep works and the ins and outs of different sleep disorders, the more interested I keep getting. My Sleep Issues Insomnia   I've had recurring insomnia for almost as long as I can remember, as far back as middle school. My insomnia is typically not being able to fall asleep with whatever I try to do to aid it. Trust me it is never a lack of trying, but once I hit over...

About my Interest in Psychology

Forensic Psychologist are a variety of different psychologist mixed in one. They may only be a Forensic Psychologist, but they don’t have to be they can be either a counseling psychologist, a school psychologist, a clinical psychologist or even a neurologist. The reason a Forensic Psychologist can came from all of these backgrounds is that they hold many duties, they are a link between the law and psychology. They will not only have a background in psychology to help with that aspect but they will also have a background in criminal behavior to fulfill the legal aspects in their jobs. To be able to become a Forensic Psychologist you would need a master’s degree along with high-level specialties and therapist positions, and whether or not you decide to have your own practice you would also need to have a PhD in that case. Important skills to have in this field are, effective communication skills, good listening skills, ability to establish trust, ability to analyze statistical informati...

About Me

Hello all, my name is Sierra Rose Crook, but I only go by Sierra. I’m from El Paso, where my parents still live. I do not have any brothers or sisters so I'm one of those odd things you would call an “only child”. The oddness doesn’t end there, me as person in general is just pretty odd, I've been known to walk to the beat of my own drum. Just for a reference point of how odd I see myself I compare myself to Tina Beltcher from Bob’s Burgers. She is socially awkward, and doesn’t do well in normal everyday situations, but she never lets that get her down. While walking to this odd beat I have lead myself to becoming a Theatre Major. I stumbled into theatre in high school, and it kind of took ahold of my life and hasn’t let go yet. When you hear someone is a theatre major you typically think you act, you are on stage, are you the star, to all of these I would laugh because actually I'm a Technical Design Major, so I run and hide from all of those things. I love de...
