Hello all, my name is Sierra Rose Crook, but I only go by Sierra. I’m from El Paso, where my parents still live. I do not have any brothers or sisters so I'm one of those odd things you would call an “only child”. The oddness doesn’t end there, me as person in general is just pretty odd, I've been known to walk to the beat of my own drum. Just for a reference point of how odd I see myself I compare myself to Tina Beltcher from Bob’s Burgers. She is socially awkward, and doesn’t do well in normal everyday situations, but she never lets that get her down. While walking to this odd beat I have lead myself to becoming a Theatre Major. I stumbled into theatre in high school, and it kind of took ahold of my life and hasn’t let go yet. When you hear someone is a theatre major you typically think you act, you are on stage, are you the star, to all of these I would laugh because actually I'm a Technical Design Major, so I run and hide from all of those things. I love designing everything else that goes into the production. Technicians are the magicians behind the scenes making sure nothing falls apart and everything looks great, and everything is visible and let so the audience gets the best experience as possible. Theatre is what originally brought me to Hardin-Simmons, I was a sophomore in high school and we were computing at regions for UIL One Act Play. I really liked the theatre and all the people I met so I kept it in mind as a school I wanted to attend. Then came my senior year and we were competing here again and that’s when I finally decided this was the school for me. With my theatre degree, I obtain in about 4 months from now I plan on working in a touring theatre or a cruise ship, or an opera house as either their residents head technician, their scenic design or as part of the wig and make up crew. I don’t every plan to stay in one place. I am a free spirit and with that I don’t love to be grounded anywhere, I love my freedom. I also love to travel which is perfect for what I want to do. My favorite place I have ever gotten to go was to Edinburgh Scotland. I was able to go there through the theatre department. We were a part of the Fringe Festival, which is the largest theatre festival in the world. If I ever get the chance in the future I would love to be able to return there that would be lovely, what would be even better would be able to work it, or be a part of it again. If theatre doesn’t work out for me I haven’t really set up any back up plans, but I live day to day anyways, so life will eventually figure itself out at some point.
This past week I got to experience a lot of active listening, and it wasn’t even for the assignment, but I used the techniques described to us in all of those conversations that I had. I had to do a lot of listening this week because I got put in between two friends who were having a dispute and didn’t want to directly talk to each other so I became their “owl.”🦉 I learned a lot about being an active listener in this situation because not only did I have to understand what they were saying and feeling because that’s what you should do when you are listening to someone and trying to be an active listener, but I also had to take this information pull out the parts the other person needed to receive and give it to them. I had about 3 conversations with each of them that were back and forth, I also had other one on one conversations with them, but not about this situation. I always try to be an active listener, because if I'm talking to someone I would want that from them as well....

Hi Sierra! I liked how you refer to yourself, that gave your words great strength and I imagined seeing you in your description.
ReplyDeleteWell ... Well ... besides the theater, you are a very creative and funny writer, I enjoy reading your blog!
Hi Javier, I'm glad you enjoyed reading this. I just put my thoughts down, if I think it I say it. I hope i can enlighten you a little more on theatre throughout this class.
DeleteHey Sierra, I’m Rachel. What is El Paso like, I’ve never been.
ReplyDeleteSince El Paso is a few hours away from Abilene, how often are you able
to see your parents? I’m a freshman so I’m still meeting new people
and you’re the first Theatre Major that I have met so far.
Being able to have the career you want to travel at the same
time is really cool and I hope that you are able to do that. Nice to meet you!
Hi Rachel, EL Paso is an interesting place. It's definitely different from anywhere else i have ever been. It has its own culture. It also has a small town feel for actually being a larger city, and despite popular belief El Paso is actually really safe for a border city. I go home for big holidays because it is about 7 hours away but I don't mind it to bad.Have you been to any of our theatre shows yet? This may seem biased but our department is really good! Yes, it was nice to meet you as well!! I hope your freshman year goes well!
DeleteYes Ma'am march to your own drum, I am so here for that. I too love Tina from Bobs Burgers her personality hits home for me. I just love her. I think its awesome your into the technical work of the theaters and now I'm curious on what goes on behind the scenes.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is a great read I love how open and true to yourself you are.
Tina is great!! I want to be her when i actually grow up. I like to say the real show is what actually goes on backstage, there is usually a lot more going on backstage then the little everyone sees on stage. We have technicians running lights, sound, media, fly rail, microphones and spot lights. We also have our prop people and hair and makeup backstage making sure actors look the way they are supposed to look and have everything they need when they go on stage. Also even before the show opens you have all the people building and designing the set and lights and costumes, and all that jazz. It's a mess sometimes, but its a beautiful mess, and i love it.
